FAQs/Entry Standard

Do I need to play an instrument already to join South Devon Youth Jazz?

Yes, you do already need to play an instrument to get the most out of South Devon Youth Jazz, although almost all instruments are welcome – our workshop attendees have played everything from trumpet to viola, french horn to trombone, drum kit to ‘cello, and we accept jazz vocalists too!

Is there a minimum standard or audition?

There is no strict minimum standard, but we would estimate that students need to be able to read music to a reasonable extent and be approximately Grade 2 technical standard on their instrument (but no need to have taken exams). There is no audition, please contact us and we’ll let you know when our next session is, and come along and give it a try!

How much does it cost?

We aim to keep costs low at this time of cost of living crisis and have two funding models:

  • Termly Membership – £15 (includes attendance at all sessions during that term and includes FREE special masterclass attendance)
  • Pay as You Go – £6 per session

We also offer the following assistance to those that may need it:

  • Sibling Discount: if more than one family member attends, costs are as follows:
    • Termly Membership – £12 per child
    • Pay As You Go – £4 per child
  • Bursaries: we offer 100% bursaries to those students in the following circumstances:
    • Pupil Premium
    • Free School Meals
    • Children in Care
    • If your financial circumstances are a barrier to attendance, please contact us in confidence and we will do our best to help.

We gratefully acknowledge the generous funding from Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs, which allows us to offer such financial terms.

What age do I need to be to join South Devon Youth Jazz?

There is no minimum age, and we accept anyone of the required standard up to the age of 18 – please contact us if you are unsure!

Do you have any online examples of a workshop so I can see what you do?
